    Centrisys/CNP Implements MagPrex Installation at Meridian Wastewater Resource Recovery Facility

    Meridian, Idaho Wastewater Resource Recovery Facility has partnered with Centrisys/CNP to implement a MagPrex biological nutrient removal system.

    KENOSHA, Wis. (October 11, 2021) – Centrisys/CNP, a leading North American manufacturer of decanter centrifuges and advanced biosolids treatment technologies, announced today that Meridian, Idaho Wastewater Resource Recovery Facility (WWRRF) has chosen the MagPrex™ sequestration process, with the option to expand to struvite harvesting.

    Meridian thoroughly evaluated nutrient management processes that would allow them to meet upcoming lower nutrient effluent limits, concluding that biological phosphorus removal was the best choice. The decision was based on process effectivity, lower lifecycle costs, and meeting chemical reduction goals for their treatment process. Biological phosphorus removal directs most phosphorus into the solids stream in the form of orthophosphate for further treatment. By concentrating the phosphorus in the solids stream, the city will permanently remove a significant portion of phosphorus from the overall treatment process and prevent recycling within the plant.

    “We had the opportunity to pilot our MagPrex phosphorus removal system at the Meridian WWRRF to prove that the system offers the lowest life cycle cost to the city,” said Gerhard Forstner, president of CNP and nutrient recovery expert. “After an evaluation of MagPrex by the city’s engineers, Mountain Water Works and Carollo, the city council decided to award the order to the Centrisys/CNP MagPrex system. We look forward to facilitating the installation and helping the city of Meridian achieve its goals.”

    The City has a compliance schedule to meet a limit of 8.5 lbs./d TP, with a projected future max month flow to a concentration of 0.07 mg/L total P. Rather than using costly and environmentally damaging chemicals, MagPrex will mitigate the high phosphorus levels at the plant with a pioneering process for wastewater treatment plant biosolids optimization and phosphorus recovery.

    Meridian’s WWRRF operates and maintains a centralized wastewater treatment facility and over 400 miles of sewer lines located throughout the city. The primary objective of the city’s wastewater division is the protection of the water supply and the processing of wastewater that flows into the facility to safeguard the health of its citizens.

    The Meridian WWRRF’s MagPrex system will significantly improve treatment efficiency, including:

    • Reduced polymer consumption up to 30 percent
    • Reduced disposal costs up to 20 percent
    • Reduced phosphate recycle loads up to 90 percent
    • Reduced maintenance costs up to 50 percent
    • Increased revenue from fertilizer up to 20 percent
    • No sodium hydroxide required for pH change

    Using the MagPrex system, operators can prevent crystallization in their biosolids train and reduce phosphate recycling by up to 90 percent. As the seventh MagPrex installation in the United States for Centrisys/CNP, the Meridian WWRRF's start-up data's anticipated timeframe will begin in the summer of 2022.
